hourglassgateemailBrethren, please join me in remembering the life and work of Worshipful Brother Edwin Usiak. Worshipful Brother Usiak is a Past Master of Dover Lodge for the year 1999. We have just received word that Worshipful Brother Usiak passed to the Celestial Lodge Above on December 21st 2008.

Services will be held tonight for Worshipful Brother Usiak at 8:00pm at Zeis-McGreevy Funeral Home, 16105 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood Ohio.

Solemn strikes the funeral chime,
Notes of our departing time;
As we journey here below.
Through a pilgrimage of woe!

Mortals, now indulge a tear,
For mortality is here!
See how wide her trophies wave
O’er the slumbers of the grave!

Here another guest we bring,
Seraphs of celestial wing,
To our funeral altar come,
Waft this friend and brother home.

Lord of all! Below – above -
Fill our hearts with truth and love;
When dissolves our earthly tie,
Take us to Thy Lodge on high.

Safe Travels, Worshipful Brother. We will meet again.

Brethren, the Worshipful Master asks your presence in Lodge on Thursday January 8th for the purpose of conferring the First Degree. Please come welcome our new Brother as he crosses the threshold into our Ancient and Hallowed Craft!

UPDATE: We also have the First Degree scheduled for another on January 15th. Please plan to attend – this is so important both to our new candidates as well as to those of us who have long walked the halls of our gentle Craft. Seeing new Brethren as they cross that first portal reminds us of the days when we were young and yet uninformed. Let us all take part in mentoring our new Brethren!

As Masons we are perpetually deriving meaning from signs and symbols, but some of the oldest and most observed signs often go missed by our Brethren because their origin has been obscured by popular culture. Take for example the signs of the Zodiac. Most people believe that the signs of the Zodiac are simply a quaint way to identify the time of a person’s birth, and to prognosticate compatibility between acquaintances.

Who hasn’t heard the oft-used phrase “What’s Your Sign”?

Signs of the Zodiac

Signs of the Zodiac

The signs of the Zodiac in this case represent certain timeframes of a person’s birth. They are specifically:
Aries (the Ram) – March 21-April 19
Taurus (the Bull) – April 20-May 20
Gemini (the Twins) – May 21-June 20
Cancer (the Crab) – June 21-July 22
Leo (the Lion) – July 23-Aug 22
Virgo (the Virgin) – Aug 23-Sep 22
Libra (the Scales) – Sep 23-Oct 22
Scorpio (the Scorpion) – Oct 23-Nov 21
Sagittarius (the Archer) – Nov 22-Dec 21
Capricorn (the Goat) – Dec 22-Jan 19
Aquarius (the Water-bearer) – Jan 20-Feb 18
Pisces (the Fishes) – Feb 19-Mar 20

But where does this come from?

The word “Zodiac” comes from the Greek language meaning “Circle of Animals”. The signs of the Zodiac are based on 12 “constellations”, or “groups of stars” as viewed from Earth. Because the Earth orbits the Sun in a flat elliptical plane, the Sun always appears to be “in” one of the 12 constellations of the Zodiac throughout different times of the year. The stars are actually the ones behind, or past, the Sun as we look from Earth out into space. more…

Monica RobbinsBrethren, a quick reminder that this Thursday’s Stated meeting will feature special guest Monica Robins. As written in our newsletter:

“At our December 4 Business Meeting, Monica Robins, the Senior Health Correspondent at Channel 3, will be the first speaker in our Dover Masonic Lodge Speaker Series. Ms. Robins will discuss general health issues with a focus on senior health, women’s health, and how to be your own health advocate.  This will be followed by a question and answer session.  As we will be at Refreshment for this installment of the Speaker Series, family and friends are welcome to attend.

Monica Robins, a member of the Broadcast Hall of Fame with more than 20 years of Broadcast Journalism experience, has been the Senior Health Correspondent at Channel 3 for over a decade. She is an Emmy award-winning reporter with nearly two dozen Emmy nominations and several Excellence in Journalism awards from the Ohio Press Club and the Associated Press. Known for her for fair, accurate and unbiased reporting, Ms. Robins’ stories are not only broadcast locally, but nationally and even internationally.

Ms. Robins has earned the Community Service Award from Fairview, Lakewood, Lutheran Hospitals and the Community West Foundation and is the first ever media recipient of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure “Power of a Partner” Award. She has also been the emcee for the Al Koran Shriners’ Firefighter Recognition Awards, and is certified by Therapy Dogs International, so she and her Great Pyrenees, Griffin, can volunteer to bring emotional support to patients
in local nursing homes. It is an honor for Dover Masonic Lodge to have Monica Robins as the first speaker in our new Dover Masonic Lodge Speaker Series and we hope to see you there.

At the end of Ms. Robins’ presentation, our guests will be excused, and Lodge will be closed.  With the closing of Lodge, we will adjourn to the Whistlestop Restaurant (673 Cahoon Road in Westlake) with our guests and enjoy some conversation and refreshments. If you plan on attending, please RSVP at rsvp@dover489.org with your name and the number of guests you plan on bringing.”
