The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (also known as “The Tomb of the Unknowns”) is a memorial that honors those who have given their lives in service as a part of our country’s Armed Forces, but whose identity cannot be verified. Located in Arlington National Cemetery, most visitors to this must-see monument say that the most memorable part of their visit is the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb.

In July 2010 a member of Dover Lodge was present at the Tomb, and filmed both the Changing of the Guard and the Wreath Ceremony that take place every day of every year. Here is that footage, brought to you for educational purposes by Dover Lodge.

As you most likely recall from our last meeting, Dover Lodge has been accepted as part of the City of Westlake’s 4th of July parade and the Grand Lodge has given us dispensation to walk and display our regalia. This is a tremendous opportunity for visibility in the community – won’t you join us? Officers will be in their tuxedos, aprons and jewels and we will be handing out candy and American flags to the crowd. For those who cannot walk the route, we will also have a Jeep in the parade with the top and doors removed for maximum sunshine! Come walk or ride with us, and let’s show the Westlake community at-large how Dover Lodge and Freemasonry are thriving.

The parade begins on Sunday July 4th at 1:00pm. Planning to be a part of it? Here are the logistics:

Parade Walkers – meet in the parking lot of Westlake Christian Church at 12:00 noon.

Parade Riders – meet in the parking lot of Westlake High School at 12:00 noon – silver jeep with American and Masonic flags flying.

Officers – please be in tuxedos. We will bring the aprons and jewels.

Non-officer Brethren – please dress in suits or jackets/ties if possible. White aprons or your own aprons worn.

Hope to see you there!!!

FAQs:

Can I wear my Past Master’s Apron?

Not only have we been given dispensation to wear our full regalia, we would be honored if our Past Masters would wear the apron they so richly deserve. Please do!

Who is bringing the candy and the flags to distribute?

Several Brethren of Dover Lodge have donated their own funds to cover the expense. Simply come and be a part of it!

What is the parade route? How long is the walk?

The parade runs its traditional route down Hilliard Boulevard. The walking portion of the parade is 1 mile, from Westlake Christian Church to Clague Park.

Can I bring my family to be a part of the parade?

We hope you do! Spouses, children, parents – any significant other is welcomed to take part!

What’s in store from a weather perspective?

As of this posting, Sunday July 4th is predicted to be sunny with 0% chance of rain. It’ll be warm for tuxedos, but we want to look our best! We’ll also have bottled water with us – plenty to keep cool.

A bit of free verse from our Brother Junior Steward. I’m certain that the Brethren of Dover Lodge know of what Brother Reulbach speaks…

As I stand here in the kitchen, I look out into the gathering room and see a very interesting sight … there is a great cross-section of men of different faiths, beliefs, colors, background and ages all sitting together around some tables. They are laughing, joking, talking about flying planes, their wives, girlfriends, children, parents, vacations, and weddings, basically anything.

I have been a part of this for less than a year.

I came not knowing what to expect, except that a person I asked if I might visit for a meeting was a very nice and kind gentleman to whom I had only spoken a few times by phone and met only once in person. I like him immediately.

I attended a few gatherings after their meetings and met some interesting people. I asked for a petition and was given the same. I guess they don’t ask you…

Some “guys” showed up at my house and visited with my wife and myself for a little while. We had some food, some coffee and some conversation. They went on their way.

I attended a few more gatherings, and after one of their meetings was congratulated and asked to show up earlier in a couple of weeks.

I showed up … Who are these guys, and what did I get myself into?

Well, after that fateful night and a couple more, I can tell you who these guys are and what I got myself into…

I stand here in the kitchen and look out into the gathering room and see a very interesting sight … I see my friends and my Brothers. Men I can count on for anything. Men whose families I would help without hesitation. Men whose widows and orphans will always be cared for. I see my family.

Well said, Brother Reulbach – the feeling is mutual.

Note: Portions of Brother Reulbach’s work were purposely omitted that relate to Masonic ceremony.

The Brethren of Dover Lodge certainly gave all of themselves to make this a meaningful and impressive ceremony, and we’re certainly pleased that Brother Puwal has reached this new level within our Craft. There were many Brethren on hand from many Lodges and many Districts, as well as many of the Masonic leaders from our district and our state. On behalf of Dover Lodge, we thank everyone who attended to observe the men of Dover Lodge as we endeavored to make this a solemn and moving night for our deserving Brother.

We’d also be remiss if we didn’t thank the men who visited with us after the inspection who are looking into Freemasonry. We hope you enjoyed your visit as much as we enjoyed having you, and we look forward to the day when we may again have the pleasure of your company!

Congratulations Brother Puwal!!!

This Freemasonry-friendly Disney franchise has generated much interest (and many questions) around our Fraternity. On March 27th 2010 the sequel was announced with a return of the original cast members (Nicolas Cage, Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger, John Voigt), original producer Jerry Bruckheimer and original director John Turteltaub. The release date is tentatively set for 2011.

Interestingly however is that new writers have been engaged for this third story. Now involved are writers Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro, recent authors of the upcoming films “The Sorceror’s Apprentice” and “The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time”. This is not surprising in light of the poor reviews given to the story line of National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Although the third episode of the $804.9 Million box-office franchise success has been announced, no details have been released concerning the plot line of the story.

For some interesting speculation around the yet-to-be-released plot summary, see here.

Also of Masonic interest, Walt Disney was a member of DeMolay International.

Friends and Brethren, below is a poem that Brother Puwal shared with me. I found it both inspirational and challenging, and think you might gain from it as well. Enjoy!

The Man In The Glass

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you King for a day,
Just go to the mirror and look at yourself
and see what that man has to say.

For it isn’t your father or mother or wife
Whose judgement upon you must pass.
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

You may be Jack Horner and chisel a plum
And think you’re a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum
If you can’t look him straight in the eye.

He’s the fellow to please – never mind all the rest,
For he’s with you clear to the end.
And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test
If the man in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.

It is a sad fact that many people spend entire lives not caring to understand the meaning behind the very words they use on a regular basis. In the English language, an interesting example is served by the names of the days of the week. Let us find the truth behind the often unknown and unconsidered origin of these words that we use on a daily basis.

In most English-speaking nations of the world, it is generally accepted that the week begins on “Sunday”. The days are therefore enumerated with “Sunday” being the first, followed by “Monday”, “Tuesday”, “Wednesday”, “Thursday”, “Friday” and finally “Saturday”, after which the naming of the days restarts it’s cycle of seven.

It is verifiable that the English names for the days of the week have their origins in the Old Germanic names of Norse gods. This Old Germanic tongue is the root from which the English language has grown. Let’s have a look:

Sunday – quite simply the Day of the Sun, the source of the Earth’s power

Monday – named for the Moon, the marker of the months (or “moonths”)

Tuesday – named for the war-god Tiw, who is often associated with the planet Mars

Wednesday – named for the chief god Wotan, also called Odin, who is associated with the planet Mercury

Thursday – named for the thunder god Thor, or “Thor’s Day”, who is associated with the planet Jupiter

Friday – named for the goddess of love Freya, who is associated with Venus

Saturday – the sole exception, Saturday keeps it’s original Latin form for the planet Saturn

Interestingly one has only to look into the Romantic languages (such as French) to see that these parallels are ubiquitous throughout the European and Western Asian lands. Here is an interesting chart that shows English and French comparisons of the day’s name, the associated planet, and the names of the gods and their attributes. Despite the fact that Germanic and Romantic languages are separate language groups, the planetary association remains the same and cannot be coincidental:

Sunday – Sun – Dimanche – from Latin “Dominica”, meaning “Day of the Lord” (the only exception)

Monday – Moon – Lundi – Lune (French for “moon”)

Tuesday – Tiw (war god) – Mardi – Mars (god of war)

Wednesday – Wotan (first god) – Mercredi – Mercury (first planet)

Thursday – Thor (god of thunder) – Jeudi – Jupiter (god of sky and thunder)

Friday – Freya (love goddess) – Vendredi – Venus (love goddess)

Saturday – (no Norse association) – Samedi – Saturn (god of harvest)

Finally of interest is that the two largest Semitic monotheistic faiths (Judaism and Islam) specifically do not use these roots, as both have a prohibition of speaking the names of other gods. Here is the English – Hebrew – Arabic – translation table for those names:

Sunday – Yom Rishon – Yaumul Ahad – “Day 1st”

Monday – Yom Sheni – Yaumul Ithnain – “Day 2nd”

Tuesday – Yom Shlishi – Yaumul Thulatha – “Day 3rd”

Wednesday – Yom Revi’i – Yaumul Arbia’a – “Day 4th”

Thursday – Yom Chamishi – Yaumul Khamees – “Day 5th”

Friday – Yom Shishi – Yaumul Jumuah – “Day 6th” Hebrew, “Day of Prayer” Arabic

Saturday – Yom HaShabbat – Yaumus Sabt – “The Day of Sabbath” Hebrew, “Day 7th” Arabic

Oh, and that crazy picture at the top of the article? It dates from the Hellenistic (Greek) period and represents the order of days as a heptagram. Starting with the symbol for the sun (circumpunct) at the top, you begin by following the right-hand segment to the next symbol, and proceed using the next path until you return to Sunday. In this manner, you hit the planetary symbol representing each planet from which the days’ names were derived. Neat, huh?

I am a newly conferred EA at Dover Lodge and I have been extremely impressed with the men of this fraternity. I highly value the passion, commitment, and dedication from the Officer Team and Brethren to the gentle craft. They pledge their dedication to each new brother and candidate to ensure that the individual is given what they need to maximize their own individual journey. Dover prides themselves on many attributes; however, none more than tradition and devotion. I consider myself very fortunate and proud to be a part of a lodge that has many superb ambassadors working together and accelerating our ancient fraternity into the future. I would like to Thank the Brethren for the continuous loyalty and unbridled enthusiasm that reverberates throughout our lodge. -Mark Puwal, EA, Dover Lodge #489

“Forget being a Mason. If they don’t invite you, you’ll never get in.”

“Its a ‘Good Old Boys’ network. If you’re not in the inner circle, they ignore you.”

And so the misinformation goes surrounding Freemasonry. But what is the truth? You might be surprised to know that every one of the statements above are not only false, but are completely antithetical to the nature of our Gentle Craft. What is required to be made a Mason? Have a look at the list of requirements:

To join a Lodge in Ohio, you must be a resident of Ohio for at least the past six months.

You must be a male at least 19 years of age.

You must believe in a Supreme Being.

You must lead a good moral and social life.

You cannot be an advocate for overthrowing our government.

You must be able to read and write in the English language.

Seems simple, you might say. But here’s where it gets difficult – YOU MUST REACH OUT TO US FIRST. Masons never invite or seek out new members. Let us not minimize the difficulty of such an approach, because for many men this is very difficult. We live in a world of internet access and so-called “social” networks, where we can comfortably hide behind a computerized persona. We get comfortable in our homes, and we value our privacy above all else. Masons want to see you. We want to sit across the table from you, to look into your eyes and see what kind of man you really might be.

See, here’s the trick – even if you meet all of the qualifications above, you still cannot even begin the process of becoming a Mason without the recommendation of two Master Masons. That means we need to see you first. We’re going to invite you to dinner. We’re going to want to learn about your thoughts. We’re going to want to laugh with you. But you HAVE to come out first.

Interested? Then reach out. Come to our “Contact Us” page where we have our phone number and contact form, and either call us or email us.

Your life will never be the same.

Never send money when solicited by anyone with whom you’re not familiar, and always verify with the person before you send if you know them. It will save you much heartache, and keep money out of the hands of dishonest people.

As a man enters into the doors of Freemasonry, a vast world is opened to him that would take several lifetimes to fully comprehend. Sadly however, people tend to be attached more to the degree numbers than what is actually taught. This is especially true of those who are opposed to Freemasonry, who ignorantly surmise that if a 3rd Degree Master Mason is bad then a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason must be the incarnation of evil.

General Albert Pike (pictured) was the Sovereign Grand Commander of the Scottish Rite for thirty-two years, and was responsible for completely revitalizing Scottish Rite Masonry from 1859 to 1891. A great philosopher, it is said that he “found Freemasonry in a cabin, and left it in a temple.”. Thought often maligned by anti-Masons, his words carry a great deal of power even to this day.

I ran across the following quote that Brother Pike delivered in a speech entitled “Address of the President” that I think speaks volumes. As Freemasons, we often try to make clear that there is no higher degree than that of Master Mason, or the “3rd Degree”. Although the 3 degrees of the Blue Lodge (or “Blue Degrees”) are the essence of Masonry while the “higher” ones are appendant bodies, this often falls on deaf ears as uninformed Masons rush through the Blue Lodge and into the Scottish Rite in the hopes that somehow the elusive 33rd Degree will be theirs. It also is ignored by anti-Masons and conspiracy theorists, who desperately cling to the notion that the “great secrets” are hidden in the 33rd Degree.

Albert Pike himself so eloquently states:

But, whatever else we may be, we are all Master Masons, and we all owe to the Masonry of the Blue Degrees our first and paramount allegiance. No man is without offence, who makes these Degrees mere stepping-stones by which to ascend to what he deems a higher level. If he does so, he is not worthy to wear the decorations of the Degrees to which he supposes himself to have ascended.

Sounds to me like Brother Pike has it right on the mark.

Why a Tuesday? Simply put, there are so many men of strong character approaching Dover Lodge that we are coming together on a much more frequent basis than typically seen over the past several years. Please join us as a man becomes a Brother and starts his Masonic journey this evening. The fellowship will be warm, and without a doubt the food will be delicious!

In this episode we delve into the fourth great hermetic principle, Polarity. In this 10th chapter of The Kybalion, we learn that opposites are not different, but rather the same and only vary in degree along a scale. This chapter serves as the basis for the remainder of this great esoteric work. Enjoy!

Brethren, Dover Lodge will be holding a practice session for all those preparing for their Entered Apprentice examination. Several Master Masons will be on-hand at Dover Lodge on Thursday October 8th at 7:30pm to assist our Entered Apprentices with the exam work. All Brethren from all regular Ohio lodges are welcome to attend! Attendees are asked to bring an item to share for “munchies”, whether finger-food, snacks or dessert. Exam practice will take place in the Lodge Room, walking through the entire ritual as many times as the Brethren request.

Dover Lodge cares greatly that the work of the exam be learned thoroughly by every Mason of every degree. This session will focus solely on the Entered Apprentice exam, but all Fellow Crafts and Master Masons are encouraged to attend and assist these worthy Entered Apprentices in their work. Dress is casual.

We believe that the memorization of the exam work is merely the “muscle memory” on the Masonic Path, and that the deeper meanings become clearer and more impactful after the memorization has taken place. Practice will be carried out behind closed doors and by mouth to ear, as it has been for hundreds of years (although EAs are certainly encouraged to bring their exam booklets for reference). Entered Apprentices and Fellow Crafts from sister lodges must be accompanied by a Brother Master Mason, or know a Dover Master Mason who can vouch for them. No Entered Apprentice or Fellow Craft will be admitted unless they are a member of Dover Lodge, or are vouched for by another Master Mason.

Brethren, please join us for a time of learning and fun in an environment of support!

Congratulations to our newest Brother who was made a Mason last evening. Our thanks go to the Brethren who gave all of their energy to make sure this was a memorable night for our newest Dover Lodge member. The Masonic professionalism was impressive, to say the least! We enjoyed a pizza party afterward, and heard a dramatic reading of Dan Brown’s latest book (‘The Lost Symbol’). Of course, the fellowship lasted well into the night!

Brethren, our schedule is already booked solid through the end of the year and beyond. New petitions continue to come in (in fact, we received another last night after the degree work) and Dover Lodge continues to grow by leaps and bounds. While we’re very pleased by the numbers, it is the quality of men approaching our doors that is the most exciting part. Dover Lodge has found itself in a position whereby we have been able to remain very selective about who partakes in the Mysteries of Freemasonry within our Masonic walls. We are proud of our selectiveness, just as we are proud of the men who do become a part of us.

These are indeed very exciting times at Dover Lodge. If you’re interested in the kind of Masonry that has been practiced for hundreds of years (and more), come join us. We’re sure you’ll leave with a smile on your face, a brotherly hand on your back, and profound thought in your mind.

Please join us for our stated meeting as we welcome our District Deputy Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother Behner, who will share with us an entertaining and educational program from Grand Lodge. This promises to be an exciting meeting, and a great chance to get back together with our Masonic Brethren to catch up on the summer’s events.

What is more, several of the Dover Lodge Brethren worked very hard during the summer giving Dover Lodge a much-needed makeover. Come see the new library, and the redecorated lodge and fellowship room. Even our kitchen was redone! Landscaping, a new flagpole and some paint and washing were all a part of the mix. All in all, Dover Lodge has always been a welcoming place – but has been made even more welcoming thanks to the efforts of dedicated Brethren.

Come enjoy!

If you’re wondering what the images are at the top of this web site, these are all examples of Masonic Trestleboards. They are used as teaching devices for those entering into our gentle Craft. Each of the symbols above alludes to moral lessons held in highest regard in our fraternity. These trestleboards range from 19th century photographic reproductions to present-day digital images. You’ll notice many of the symbols repeated throughout the many trestleboards, every one holding its own depths of meaning.

We hope you enjoy this glimpse of the wide variety of works done by those who desire to give back to our Fraternity by using their artistic skills. If you’d like a closer look to view more detail, a downloadable version of the original collage follows. Feel free to leave comments below!

Friends and Brethren, the men of Dover Lodge were both overjoyed and humbled today. Dover Lodge has received the 2009 Ritual Award for First Place in our inspection degree for the 22nd Masonic District! Our thanks to all of the Brethren who participated in the degree work, as well as to all of the Brethren who give so much of their time and energy to Dover Lodge. This award is for all of us, and reflects the pride in Masonry that is such a special part of Dover Lodge.

We thank the visiting Brethren who gave us their spiritual and Brotherly support by being present during our inspection. Your encouragement is the very source of our energy.

Thanks as well go to our inspecting District Deputy Grand Master, Right Worshipful Brother Behner. Your guidance has helped light the way to this honor.

And of course, lest we fail to make mention: three cheers for our Worshipful Master!!!

Dover Lodge is a special place for all of its members, and we hope that our visitors also find it a welcoming shelter in this world of uncertainty. We continue to be approached by men who are investigating for themselves what being a Mason truly means. We hope that this award is seen by those men for what it truly represents – our sincere and fervent desire to make good men better.

Friends and Brethren, we did it! Our “Master Mason May” wrapped up tonight, with three new Brethren having undergone the third degree of Freemasonry. These were moving nights full of deep meaning and strong brotherhood. Dover Lodge carries on the tradition of great men, and we can only hope to live up to the path that was tread so many years before our feet reached the beginning.

Our most sincere and fervent thanks go out to the Brethren from our sister lodges who joined us in our labors. The work was demanding, but you helped us shine for our newly-raised Brethren. What’s more, you showed our new Master Masons the truth behind how seriously we take our Brotherhood. We are so grateful for you.

We also thank those who visited, and who added to the meaning for these men. Our Tiler will always open the door wide for you. Please visit often!

We have one more degree coming in mid-June for a Physician who desires to be initiated into our gentle craft. So much is happening at Dover Lodge, and men of the strongest character are picking up the working tools and employing them with skillful hands. Please come join us for our next meeting on June 4th, 2009 at 7:30pm.

This evening a man was raised to the degree of Master Mason, marking the 5th successive generation of Master Masons in his family. Congratulations, my Brother!

Our thanks to all of the Brethren who visited from other Lodges – it is a beautiful thing to see the spirit of Brotherhood on such an important night. We truly thank you for your support. We were also honored with several guests, two of whom had never before visited Dover Lodge and are just beginning to look into Freemasonry.

The working tools of Masonry are indeed warm with use at Dover Lodge. Next Thursday (5/14/09 @ 7:30pm) we will be raising another Brother to the degree of Master Mason. Please join us, whether you are a Master Mason and wish to help make the night memorable, or are a visitor and want to learn more about Masonry (visitors are welcomed to arrive at 9:30pm).

This excellent book will likely be a future reading on the Dover Lodge Masonic Podcast. From Wikipedia, here is a brief description of the book:

This piece of literature describes a fascinating story of love and occult aspiration. The plot is as follows: Zanoni, timeless Rosicrucian brother, falls in love with Viola Pisani, promising young and beautiful singer, daughter of Pisani, misunderstood violinist in Italy. Glyndon, English gentleman loves Viola as well but his spiritual growth sees Zanoni as a master. The story develops in the days of the French Revolution in 1789.

In this episode, we cover Chapter 7 and have made it halfway through this interesting and controversial masterpiece. As we cover “The All in All”, it may be of benefit to listen to this chapter a couple of times, as the material is increasing in esoteric depth.

Thank you for all of the positive comments. Please feel free to leave your feedback below, or come by the Lodge and join us. We typically meet after the closed meetings with the public to offer an open discussion of esoteric subjects. During the month of May we will be raising three young Brethren to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason. As per an earlier notice, these degrees will take place on May 7th, 14th and 21st. In light of the importance of the attendance of all Dover Lodge Brethren, as well as our fervent desire to make these nights most meaningful for these young Brethren, the Worshipful Master has called a special meeting for the purpose of rehearsing the 3rd Degree. The special meeting for the purpose of 3rd Degree practice is called for Thursday April 30th at 7:30pm sharp.

Brethren, we earnestly request your attendance. The night of the 3rd Degree is the most memorable and impactful night of any man’s Masonic lifetime. Even if only to come and sit on the sidelines to show our newest brethren our support, it behooves all Dover Lodge members to be present during the very busy month of May. If you wish to take a part in the degree – even a non-speaking part, please be here for this important Special Meeting.

Friends and Brethren, thank you for joining us for the 2009 Dover Lodge Potluck Dinner! We were filled to near capacity in the room, and what a joy it was to have Brethren and visitors of all ages. The halls of Dover Lodge were vitalized by the laughter of children at play and by the Brotherly Love shared by all in attendance. Long-time WKYC Channel 3 Weather Forecaster Eileen McShea was our guest speaker, and gave an informative talk on Hanson Services, and how it can benefit our loved ones.

Special thanks to all the Brethren and their wives who helped make this happen. We also especially thank our visitors, and hope that they return for future events at Dover Lodge!

Below is a brief slideshow of the event. The photos were taken by cell phone, and thus the poor quality, but we wanted to show some of the sights of the potluck!

We are educated men. We spend time improving ourselves in the knowledge of nature’s laws, and bind ourselves together as Brethren in this world of separation. We study the meaning of our ritual, and perfect our memories of the ancient texts and tenets of our gentle Craft. We endeavor to impart very deep truths to the men who walk across our threshold, and labor endlessly to ingrain Masonry’s teachings in order to make good men better.

But every so often, our souls soar to the heights when our Brethren practice their art.

During our last meeting, we were treated to a display of Brother Altuntas’ skill in playing guitar in the timeless Flamenco style. After a discourse on the origin and stylistic genre of this passionate music, the walls of Dover Lodge seemed themselves to listen as our Brother took us on a journey by playing us a sample.

Brethren and friends, Dover Lodge is undertaking an amazing journey of strongest brotherhood, mystical and moving teaching, and passionate art. Won’t you come walk with us?

Below is a sample of Brother Altuntas’ work. Please note – what he plays below is not from memory or sheet music. It is completely spontaneous and impromptu.

[NOTE : Time Updated]

Brethren, it is with a deep sense of sorrow that we report the loss of a Brother of Dover Lodge. Brother Bill Yeager, a long-time member of Dover Lodge and a Master Mason for 65 years, passed to the Celestial Lodge above on Friday February 27th. Brother Yeager will be sorely missed, as he was truly a pillar of Dover Lodge.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday March 21st at 4:00pm at Dover Congregational Church.

Solemn strikes the funeral chime,
Notes of our departing time;
As we journey here below.
Through a pilgrimage of woe!

Mortals, now indulge a tear,
For mortality is here!
See how wide her trophies wave
O’er the slumbers of the grave!

Here another guest we bring,
Seraphs of celestial wing,
To our funeral altar come,
Waft this friend and brother home.

Lord of all! Below – above -
Fill our hearts with truth and love;
When dissolves our earthly tie,
Take us to Thy Lodge on high.

Brother Yeager, we’ll miss you. We’ll look forward to meeting again on the Level of the Celestial Lodge above.

We’re opening our doors to the public! Please join us on Saturday March 21st, 2009 from 1pm-3pm, and get an insider’s look at Dover Masonic Lodge. We’ll be serving light snacks and will be there to answer any questions you might have about Freemasonry in general and Dover Lodge in particular. Ever wonder what the inside of a Lodge Room looks like? What do Masons do behind closed doors? What are all these symbols associated with Masonry? Is it just a bunch of stuffy people? Do the Masons know where the “National Treasure” is hidden?

You’ll be able to get answers from Masons themselves, and see some things upon which most people have never laid eyes. So come out and join us!

As Masons we are perpetually deriving meaning from signs and symbols, but some of the oldest and most observed signs often go missed by our Brethren because their origin has been obscured by popular culture. Take for example the signs of the Zodiac. Most people believe that the signs of the Zodiac are simply a quaint way to identify the time of a person’s birth, and to prognosticate compatibility between acquaintances.

Who hasn’t heard the oft-used phrase “What’s Your Sign”?

Signs of the Zodiac

The signs of the Zodiac in this case represent certain timeframes of a person’s birth. They are specifically:
Aries (the Ram) – March 21-April 19
Taurus (the Bull) – April 20-May 20
Gemini (the Twins) – May 21-June 20
Cancer (the Crab) – June 21-July 22
Leo (the Lion) – July 23-Aug 22
Virgo (the Virgin) – Aug 23-Sep 22
Libra (the Scales) – Sep 23-Oct 22
Scorpio (the Scorpion) – Oct 23-Nov 21
Sagittarius (the Archer) – Nov 22-Dec 21
Capricorn (the Goat) – Dec 22-Jan 19
Aquarius (the Water-bearer) – Jan 20-Feb 18
Pisces (the Fishes) – Feb 19-Mar 20

But where does this come from?

The word “Zodiac” comes from the Greek language meaning “Circle of Animals”. The signs of the Zodiac are based on 12 “constellations”, or “groups of stars” as viewed from Earth. Because the Earth orbits the Sun in a flat elliptical plane, the Sun always appears to be “in” one of the 12 constellations of the Zodiac throughout different times of the year. The stars are actually the ones behind, or past, the Sun as we look from Earth out into space.

The Sun in the Zodiac

Ancient Babylonians, whose system we use today, utilized a set of 12 animals superimposed over the stars of these constellations to easily identify them. To this day as the year progresses each morning the sun rises, follows and sets inside the boundaries of these constellations. During Babylonian times (around 1700-729 BCE) the Vernal Equinox, or Spring, was when the Sun rose in the constellation of Aries. When a person was asked what their sign was, it was the same as asking what time of year they were born.

Although we use the same Babylonian designations today, they actually no longer hold true to the months outlined above. A person born on March 30th is said to be of the “Sign of Aries”, but in fact the Sun has risen in the constellation of Pisces on March 30th since around the year 1 CE. The planet Earth actually wobbles on its axis, such that every approximately 2,150 years the Sun rises in the prior constellation or “Sign”. By way of example, in the year 2008 CE (this year) the Sun rises in the sign of Pisces on the Spring Equinox (around March 21). In the year 1000 BCE the Sun rose in the sign of Aries on March 21, and in the year 3000 BCE the Sun rose in the sign of Taurus on March 21. This is known as the “Precession of the Equinox”, meaning that the sign in which the Sun rises on the Spring Equinox moves backward through the Zodiac every 2,150 years. Perhaps one has heard the song from the Broadway musical “Hair”, or the one popularized on the radio in the 1970s, titled “The Age of Aquarius”. The chorus of this song sings joyfully that “This is the dawning of the Age of Aquarius”. What the song is saying is that in a short time (around the year 2150 CE) the Sun will rise in the Sign of Aquarius on March 21 and will continue to do so until the year 4300 CE.

Left: The Sun on December 1st 1750BCE during the reign of Babylonian King Hammurabi resides in Sagittarius. Right: The Sun on December 1st 2008CE resides in Scorpius. This comparison shows the results of Precession.

The Earth will complete one full “wobble” and will precede through all of the constellations back to today’s Sign (Pisces) in around the year 25800 CE. By that time, we should all have our 50-year pins many times over!

As written in our newsletter:

“At our December 4 Business Meeting, Monica Robins, the Senior Health Correspondent at Channel 3, will be the first speaker in our Dover Masonic Lodge Speaker Series. Ms. Robins will discuss general health issues with a focus on senior health, women’s health, and how to be your own health advocate. This will be followed by a question and answer session. As we will be at Refreshment for this installment of the Speaker Series, family and friends are welcome to attend.

Monica Robins, a member of the Broadcast Hall of Fame with more than 20 years of Broadcast Journalism experience, has been the Senior Health Correspondent at Channel 3 for over a decade. She is an Emmy award-winning reporter with nearly two dozen Emmy nominations and several Excellence in Journalism awards from the Ohio Press Club and the Associated Press. Known for her for fair, accurate and unbiased reporting, Ms. Robins’ stories are not only broadcast locally, but nationally and even internationally.

Ms. Robins has earned the Community Service Award from Fairview, Lakewood, Lutheran Hospitals and the Community West Foundation and is the first ever media recipient of Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure “Power of a Partner” Award. She has also been the emcee for the Al Koran Shriners’ Firefighter Recognition Awards, and is certified by Therapy Dogs International, so she and her Great Pyrenees, Griffin, can volunteer to bring emotional support to patients
in local nursing homes. It is an honor for Dover Masonic Lodge to have Monica Robins as the first speaker in our new Dover Masonic Lodge Speaker Series and we hope to see you there.

At the end of Ms. Robins’ presentation, our guests will be excused, and Lodge will be closed. With the closing of Lodge, we will adjourn to the Whistlestop Restaurant (673 Cahoon Road in Westlake) with our guests and enjoy some conversation and refreshments. If you plan on attending, please RSVP at rsvp@dover489.org with your name and the number of guests you plan on bringing.”

Robinson, one of the giants of our Fraternity. Please take advantage of the links inserted in this article for your further edification!

The founding visionary of the Masonic Information Center, John was a former Marine, a farmer, a business executive, and an author with a special interest in the history of Medieval Britain and the Crusades.

During his lifetime he was a member of the Medieval Academy of America, The Organization of American Historians, and the Royal Over-Seas League of London. He also headed a family trust dedicated to historical research and publication.

Robinson first began studying Freemasonry in the early 1980s and came to the attention of Masons with his book “Born in Blood: The Lost Secrets of Freemasonry” presenting a believable explanation for a connection between the Knights Templars and modern-day Masons. A second book, “Dungeon, Fire and Sword: The Knights Templar in the Crusades” soon followed. He soon found himself regularly speaking to Masonic and non-Masonic groups: the former having a profound interest in his findings while the latter often concerned about perceived secrecy and imagined wrong-doings.

In 1993, Robinson published “A Pilgrim’s Path: One Man’s Road to the Masonic Temple” in which he described his experiences with Masons and those against them. Masonic authors praised the work as comprehensive and profound. As a result of his interactions with Masons, he ultimately petitioned a lodge and became Brother Robinson – as explained in his book. Regretfully, not long afterwards, he became ill and passed to the celestial lodge above.

The Lodge Education Officer of Dover Lodge recommends highly Brother Robinson’s books. Start with “Born In Blood” (link above).
